Jason Robert Brown, the creator of Parade and Songs for a New World, has written a distinctive new Off-Broadway musical. The Last Five Years tells the story of a failed marriage of 20-somethings: he a successful novelist, she a struggling actress. Her story is told in reverse, his conventionally moving forward. They meet in the middle at the point of their wedding. Brown’s strong writing has found a solid following among musical theatre fans. Short, bittersweet and nearly perfect, Brown has come up with a winning combination of music and book.
See What Others Are Saying!
This book has all of the wonderful music from this fantastic show, and I used it more than once for auditions. Beware, though… the piano is pretty challenging in parts. I learned this the hard way at a couple of auditions. It might be too much to expect your accompanist to sight read. Great to find performance pieces for cabarets etc!
Had the chance to perform in concert with the one and only Jason Robert Brown and wanted something I could have him sign to commemorate the event! This is my second copy of this score and although missing a couple songs from the show, it’s still my favorite!
The whole musical has a wonderful concept – a relationship from beginning to end over 5 years, told by both parties. The songs are emotional – raw and real and true to life. Each song is wonderful on its own, but woven together the story is beautiful and tragic at the same time.
The recording of The Last Five Years is haunting – well nigh addictive. The two superb talents, Sherie Renee Scott and Norbert Leo Butz performing the words and music of Jason Robert Brown make the CD and MP3 indispensable. To read the words and lyrics by that wunderkind Jason Robert Brown puts the book in a premier location in my library.
